The designer who built
this room.

Arthur Elrod arrived in Palm Springs in 1947 and spent the next two decades defining what the desert interior could be. His firm, Arthur Elrod & Associates — established on Palm Canyon Drive in 1954 — shaped the interiors of the most celebrated mid-century homes in the Coachella Valley, working alongside architects including John Lautner, William Cody, Donald Wexler, and Hugh Kaptur.

850 N Palm Canyon Drive was his studio from 1968. The building's architectural lighted ceiling, the original riveted entry door, the proportions of the showroom — all reflect the design language his firm brought to the corridor and to the world.

"Give me what you think I should have on this lot." — Arthur Elrod, to John Lautner, 1968

Elrod died in 1974 in a car accident in Palm Springs. He was 49. The studio at 850 N Palm Canyon is one of the last remaining spaces directly connected to his practice. The space is now empty and ready for its next chapter. On June 12, come see if it aligns with what you are building.

Arthur Elrod: Desert Cool

A documentary · Screening June 12 · Palm Springs Cultural Center

The open house at 850 N Palm Canyon is presented in partnership with the Palm Springs Cultural Center, who are screening Arthur Elrod: Desert Cool on June 12 — a documentary exploring the life and legacy of the designer who built his studio at this address.

The two events are separate. The open house is here at 850. The film is at PSCC. Both celebrate Elrod’s legacy and the corridor he helped define.
